Aviation Safety: A Continuous Journey of Learning and Improvement
The recent Ryanair incident on a flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen, involving damage to a cabin window and the subsequent return to the departure airport, reminds us that aviation safety is not a matter of chance—it is the result of a robust and continuously evolving system.
Thanks to the professionalism of the flight crew and the effective execution of emergency procedures, the aircraft landed safely, and the injured passenger received immediate medical attention.
As an Aviation Safety professional, I see this event as an opportunity to reinforce an important message.
Safety in aviation is built through multiple layers of protection. It begins with aircraft design and continues through manufacturing, certification, maintenance, operations, and the continuous training of everyone involved.
At the heart of this approach is the Safety Management System (SMS). Rather than reacting only after an event occurs, SMS provides a proactive framework for identifying hazards, assessing and managing risks, monitoring safety performance, and driving continuous improvement across the entire aviation system.
Despite rigorous safety standards and comprehensive safety measures, incidents can still occur. This reflects a simple but important reality:
“Nothing created by human hands can ever be perfect, because humans themselves are not perfect.”
For this reason, every aviation occurrence is investigated independently and objectively—not to assign blame, but to understand what happened, identify the underlying causes, learn valuable lessons, and implement improvements that reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
This commitment to continuous learning, effective risk management, and a strong safety culture is one of the fundamental reasons why aviation remains one of the safest modes of transportation in the world.
“Every incident is a lesson. Every lesson is an opportunity to make aviation even safer.”
